The importance of place is evident in all of Raymond Knaub's artwork. He was born into a farming family which helped him gain a bond with the land. Harmony, wholeness, light, space and reverence for the land are adjectives Raymond uses to describe his work. Knaub's works are based on actual landscapes, but he feels no obligation to render them exactly as an illustrator would do. His work evolving over the years to reflect a deeper internal interpretation. His paintings have been referred to as Romantic Realism.
Raymond Knaub was born and raised in Nebraska to parents of German Russian descent. Knaub's youth was alive with history and "romance". Through knowing the physical features of and being in touch with the deeper "feel" of the land, Raymond Knaub has come to know who he is. By sharing his paintings, he also helps us to know who we are.
Raymond Knaub feels that for most artists the first 15 years of life really has an influence on what kind of artist they become. This is evident in his work. His landscapes show a respect for the land and man's relationship to it. Raymond says, "Sky, light and land are eternal. They will always exist - even if we do not. Perhaps that is why I am awed and comforted at the same time.”
Raymond Knaub received his BFA from the University of Nebraska and did post graduate work at the University of Colorado. He is now a full time painter of the West and Great Plains. He has exhibited widely for the past twenty years, participating in a one-man show on an annual basis as well as many group exhibitions and invitational shows.
About his own work, Raymond says, "I can't say that I paint purely for myself. Painting is an emotional communication with another person. The viewer brings to the painting his or her own baggage. They interpret it the way they want. The interpretations may or may not coincide with mine, but that's all right." The viewing of the artwork engenders communication, not only with the work itself, but with the one who produced the work and with the original source of material as well. In this way, each of us learns something important about place and in turn ourselves.
