Peter Van Dusen is an artist who, more than most, understands the environment around him. He received his doctorate in geography from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. His years of teaching, illustrating and consulting work sharpened his perception of the land and taught him to look closely at the relationships between people and their environment.
Van Dusen's transition from scientific illustrator to fine arts was based on an overwhelming need to express and share his love for the rich variety of America's land.
While Van Dusen works in pen and ink, pencil and is a woodcarver, his favorite medium is oil. Almost any subject matter interests him: mountain men, seascapes, boats, airplanes, autos, landscapes and wildlife. His preference is to paint Indian people, western lands and waterscapes. He says, “It is not so important to be known for a subject matter. More important is the desire to paint and the caliber of painting.”
Many galleries and private collections throughout the United States, Germany and Austria display the fine art work of this scientist turned painter.
