It is evident that William Rhea loves the city. He selects scenes that "grab me". As he explains, "My subjects are so obvious, I am surprised that I don't have to stand in line to paint them". A professor of art at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, Rhea teaches the principles of good composition in painting. "Armed with a strong subject, it feels as if the composition will fall into place. The composition is the 'bones' of the picture. The next logical step is the painting process".
