Han-Wu Shen was born in 1950 in China. In his early art career Shen was an illustrator of story books. Before long his beautiful paintings earned him the distinction of being one of the most famous Chinese Illustrators. In the mid 1980's Shen made the decision to become a professional artist. He studied at the Wuhan Art Academy and then majored in oil painting at the Hubei Art Academy.
Shen is known for his portraits of people in the Chinese countryside. His paintings convey the warmth and empathy he feels towards his subjects. "Whenever I think of the countryside, the mountain villages, streams and chimney smoke, I think of those kind people...they are ordinary people but in their eyes you can see something which moves you".
Han-Wu Shen's paintings have been exhibited in important art exhibitions throughout China. Since moving to the US in 2003, his paintings have been collected Internationally. He has also gained recognition as a Living Master by the prestigious Art Renewal Center.
