Merryl Jaye has been painting all her life, but she seriously pursued it at age 40 after ending a long music and songwriting career. She began painting Cape Cod-style cottages, and eventually adopted African American themes as the focus of her work.
Jaye finds her subjects in her everyday life. The adults and children depicted in her art are friends and acquaintances, many of whom live in her neighborhood. Most of Merryl Jaye's art depicts scenes of African American women and girls in idealized settings.
